Our Story

The dream was France.

The reality was much harder.

And far more rewarding.

Most people dream about buying a winery in France.

Geoff and Marion Cook decided to rebuild one.

In 2015, after decades of business, farming and wine industry experience in Australia, they found a neglected vineyard overlooking the Gironde River in Bordeaux.

The view was extraordinary.

The work ahead was daunting.

The vineyard required replanting.

The property required restoration.

The regulations required patience.

None of that changed the decision.

If anything, it strengthened it.

Learning Bordeaux

Bordeaux is one of the most respected and regulated wine regions in the world.

Becoming part of it meant more than simply owning land.

It meant learning.

Learning from neighbours.

Learning from local winemakers.

Learning from generations of knowledge already embedded in the region.

The support of neighbouring growers and winemaking families helped transform uncertainty into understanding.

The vineyard became a classroom.

The region became a community.

Building Something Different

As the vineyard was replanted, Geoff and Marion had an opportunity to think carefully about what kind of wines they wanted to create.

Merlot remained central to the estate, reflecting the traditions of Bordeaux's Right Bank.

But Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot also captured their imagination.

These varieties offered depth, structure and personality that deserved greater attention.

Over time they became a defining part of Château Maine Gazin's identity.

Not because they were different.

Because they were exceptional.

The Organic Commitment

Organic farming was not the easiest path.

It rarely is.

Yet it aligned perfectly with how Geoff and Marion believed the land should be cared for.

After beginning the conversion process in 2019, the estate committed fully to organic certification despite the additional work and complexity involved.

Today that commitment remains unchanged.
